What is PNR Status?
|Passenger Current Status|
What is PNR status?
PNR is the abbreviation of ‘Passenger Name Record’. The PNR is somewhat a record in the database of the Railway computer system which to which the details of the journey of an individual passenger or might be a group of passengers is stored.
When a reserved railway ticket gets booked, the details of the passenger are stored in the database of the reservation system. The following details have to be associated with some unique number, so for the same case a unique 10 digit PNR is generated, and this reference number is printed on the ticket.
The PNR associates a passenger’s name, address, age gender etc. and is saved in the database. Also, it includes extra columns so to store, booking and current status of the ticket.
As it is obvious that a train has a finite number of seats, there is sometimes where one may not get a confirmation. Hence, the booking status of such a waiting list (W/L) ticket changes as soon as there is an availability of a reserved seat in the case of cancellation. The new present reservation is known as PNR status.
Where is the PNR number on a ticket?
The PNR number is most of the times printed at the top left corner of the tickets which are received from railway stations booking window.
And it is mentioned in a separate cell, on the top in the case of an E-Ticket (which you book, or generated online through IRCTC site).
How to check the PNR status?
You can enquire that through many different mediums. I’m going to mention the most popular and convenient one.
- Mobile applications
- PNR status through websites
- Reservation checks through SMS
- Railway station at inquiry counters
- The final reservation charts
- Mobile Application
There are many smartphone applications, which are developed by unofficial sources for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. Here is the link to one of them for android apps; you can pretty much just do a Google search if you are searching one for your own platform. An app similar to this becomes very handy for those who travel very often.
Inquiry of PNR status through online websites
Here I would be listing down some of the websites which you can access or use to check your PNR status.
http://www.indianrail.gov.in/pnr_Enq.html (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation)
The above is the only official partner which manages online ticking of Indian railways. To check your PNR status, you just have to log in to IRCTC website and click on an option which says ‘Book Ticket History’ and you can get PNR status by selecting the following E-Ticket.
This is somewhat an unofficial website but I listed it down , as it is doing a respectable job by helping most of the Indian rail travelers to check the PNR status, besides that you are also able to check a status coach, train coach position and also train running status, so this comes in quite handy at times
Checking reservation through SMS
The Railway has launched an SMS service for the sake of PNR inquiry, so to enhance the satisfaction of their customers. The Passenger sometimes does not have access to the World Wide Web, in such a case they find it useful and a convenient mean.
SMS Service (139)
This was initially launched by the IRCTC.
In order to get the PNR status on your mobile phone through SMS, you simply have to send the following message to 139
PNR <INSERT YOUR 10 DIGIT PNR NUMBER HERE>
Example: If you have a PNR number ‘9999999999’
You simply have to send PNR 9999999999
This is available on most of the major cellular networks (Airtel, Aircel, Idea, BSNL, MTNL, MTS, Tata, Reliance, Telenor, Vodafone etc.
SMS Service 5676747
RailZone maintains this one. To follow this method
SMS the following to 5676747
PNR <Your PNR Number here>
Example: PNR 9999999999
Railway station at inquiry counters
You just have to do some grease work and simply have to ask the same at the inquiry counter addressing your PNR.
Final reservation charts
There is a chart which is posted on the notice board of the railway station platforms; it is mostly prepared 2, 3 hours prior to the train departure time.
Waitlist tickets & their type, along with their confirmation priority
There are some predefined rules, based on which the railway allots different types of quotas on tickets, whenever a ticket is not confirmed.
Majorly two types – GNWL AND CKWL
GNWL (General waiting list)
This list is most likely to get the confirmation i.e. has the highest priority. You might get a GNWL if you happen to start your journey closer to training source and also end it at a station which is close to the destination source.
CKWL (TATKAL waiting list)
If you happen to book your ticket under tatkal quota, you are likely to get a CKWL status. You should keep a note that the CKWL tickets will be confirmed only when the GNWL tickets are confirmed. Therefore the chance for a CKWL ticket to get confirmed is quite less.
Apart from the mentioned major waiting list quotas, The Railways had put up or defined some more quotas for long journeys which are RQWL(Request waiting list),RLWL(Remote waiting list),RLGN(Remote Location General waiting list),PQWL(Pooled Quota Waiting List). However, the chances for these mentioned waiting lists is quite less as compared to the Major two.
Types of trains and the PNR generation
Metro trains –
Currently, these type of trains does not need to generate a PNR status as they are quite frequent and fast and only available in few major cities.
Suburban Local –
It is quite not possible for these Local trains to get a seat reserved, and therefore cannot get a PNR status for tickets.
Passenger trains –
These happen to run between important and small distanced cities only, reserved tickets are not available and hence a unique PNR number is not generated for these as well.
Express and super fast express –
These are faster than the above-mentioned railways, they happen to run across long distances, The tickets are supposed to be reserved and hence it is mandatory to generate a PNR number and travel this also helps to identify the travelers
- Shatabdi and Janshatabdi Express Trains:
- Garib Rath
- Rajdhani Express
- Duranto Express
It is mandatory to generate the mentioned and there’s more, these are exclusive and travel across major cities all over India.
